Description

In a new report on the treatment of intersex children/children with variations in sex characteristics in Denmark and Germany, Amnesty’s researchers document the practice of non-emergency, invasive and irreversible medical interventions on babies and very young intersex children, and that most of these procedures are operations being performed for social or cosmetic reasons – often with the purpose of ‘normalising’ the appearance of the child’s genitalia so that they’ll live up to a stereotypical perception of boy and girl.

The operation takes place before the child is old enough to express their own wishes. Today, most surgeries are performed with the consent of the parents, based on very limited information from the doctors.

Come and hear more about Amnesty’s new report, as well as personal testimonies from intersex persons.
